About Clean Slate

Clean Slate is proud to present the UK's first ever range of Fair Trade and Organic Cotton School Uniforms. It is our aim to be an exemplary fair trade company and wherever possible use our business as a proponent of ethical and environmentally sustainable practices.

Clean Slate was founded by husband and wife entrepreneurs, Mark Rogers and Carry Somers. They created the company in March 2006 after searching the UK for cotton school uniforms which were not chemically treated for Carry's daughter, Sienna (age 10.) Of principal concern to them was the potentially harmful environmental and health effects of PFOA; a compound used to make Teflon which is then applied to mass-produced children's garments for an "Easy-Care" finish.

The decision to create a company that could provide environmentally friendly school uniforms evolved out of their experience producing fair trade clothing. Carry Somers is the owner of Pachacuti who for 14 years  has been a retailer and wholesaler of fair trade clothing and accessories from the Andes. For her pioneering efforts in fair trade, she has won Country Living Magazines's 2006 Enterprising Rural Women Award.

Like Jamie Oliver's campaign for healthier school dinners, they hope Clean Slate will raise public awareness about the benefits of eco-uniforms. They feel there is a fantastic opportunity to teach a new generation of children how their personal actions can make a positive difference to the world in which we live.
